Kuba is a geometrically patterned cloth traditionally woven from raffia leaves by the Kuba people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, formerly Zaire. The naturally colored fabric is created through a labor intensive process of hand-dyeing using mud, indigo or the powered bark of the camwood tree. Most Kuba designs are a variation on rectangular or square pieces of woven palm leaf fiber enhanced by strong geometric patterns and executed in linear embroidery and other stitches. The stitches are then cut to form pile surfaces resembling the look and feel of velvet. The designs are frequently used in ceremonial skirts, tribute cloths, headdresses and basketry.
